Part of International SEO: the questions that matter
International SEO checklist, from first line to sign-off
International SEO checklist for 2027 verifies market readiness, locale access, full-task localization, technical mapping, quality, measurement, and ownership.
What to take away
- Score every check as pass, fail, unknown or not applicable, and record evidence, owner, severity and correction date beside it.
- Market readiness decides which locales exist. Payment, tax, legal and support are approved before translation starts.
- One current locale map feeds URLs, canonicals, hreflang and switchers. Verify the output on the live template.
- Automated crawls and Search Console segments supply the evidence file. The sign-off names who rechecks what, and when.
- Escalate customer harm, false market claims, inaccessible variants, broken checkout and indexing conflicts ahead of keyword polish.
A launch rarely fails on linguistics. It fails on missing paperwork, an unapproved payment method or a hreflang cluster nobody tested.
The local SEO checklist is the same gate applied to one market, and the quickest way to learn the format before you multiply it.
Market readiness is signed before translation starts
Each market holds one row in the readiness file. If payment, tax, legal, support or fulfillment is unapproved, that locale stays out of launch scope.
- CanadaGST/HST place-of-supply rules decide what an Ontario buyer is charged. The tax owner signs before checkout copy is translated and files the Canada Revenue Agency guidance as the citation.
- Germanyan Impressum and a VAT ID are legal requirements. Missing either blocks the domain, not one page.
- Japanconsumption tax display and local payment methods such as Konbini change the checkout template, not only the strings.
A locale with no support hours, no returns address and no local number tends to generate refunds, and the translation cost is hard to recover in year one.
The locale map drives URLs, canonicals and switchers
One file lists every country-language pair with purpose, source locale, owner, URL and launch state. Language tags follow the W3C guidance on choosing language tags, which says to add a script or region only when the distinction is needed.
Locale map drives URLs
- Each locale has a stable URL that loads without a cookie or an IP redirect.
- A visitor can switch locale without losing the page they were reading.
- Navigation, forms, error messages, email and support complete the journey in one language.
- Unsupported products are excluded rather than represented by empty variants.
Country-only values in a language field are wrong. So are retired pages sitting inside a live hreflang cluster. The international SEO mistakes write-up catalogues half-migrated clusters, which is where most broken reciprocal sets start.
Example: one locale page and one scored row
The Canadian English pricing page declares its own cluster. When the values drift from the locale map, the map wins and the page is the defect.
One locale page
hreflang="en-ca"- self reference to /ca/en/pricing
hreflang="fr-ca"- /ca/fr/pricing
hreflang="en-us"- /us/en/pricing
hreflang="x-default"- /us/en/pricing
rel="canonical"- /ca/en/pricing
Hreflang attributes pair a URL with a language and an optional region. The hreflang reference shows how the values combine and why every set needs a self reference.
Canonical and hreflang calls cause most of the arguments in a launch review. The common international SEO questions page collects the recurring ones in one place.
A filled row from a sign-off file:
One scored row
| Market | Locale | Check | State | Evidence | Owner | Severity | Correction date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canada | fr-CA | Hreflang on /ca/fr/pricing | Pass | Crawl export, mid-November | Web lead | Low | Recheck in 90 days |
| Germany | de-DE | Tax line in checkout | Fail | Screenshot, VAT missing | Payments owner | High | 6 December |
Automated checks and the evidence file
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider or Sitebulb: a full crawl for hreflang errors, canonical conflicts, non-200 locale URLs and missing reciprocal returns.
- Google Search ConsolePerformance filtered by country and by locale folder, plus the Page Indexing report for excluded locale URLs.
- Lighthouse and axe DevToolsaccessibility and performance run against live locale templates.
- Ahrefs or Semrush site auditsredirect chains and internal links aimed at retired locale paths.
Search Console country data reflects where users are, not which locale they read. Record that limitation rather than treating the segment as a language report.
Scoring states, owners and recheck triggers
Scoring states and owners
| State | What the record holds | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Pass | Evidence link, owner, date, reviewer | Monitor |
| Fail | Impact, scope, cause, deadline | Correct, then retest |
| Unknown | The missing market, language, technical or metric evidence | Investigate before launch |
| Not applicable | Reason and the approving owner | Recheck after a change |
Locale mappings, translations, regional facts, templates, analytics and rollback each carry a named owner. Catalog, routing, CMS, domain and agency changes trigger a multilingual regression check.
Close a failed item only when the production page, the technical output, the customer flow and the report agree. Retired pages leave canonicals, hreflang, sitemaps, switchers, navigation and reports in one release.
For timelines that survive a budget review, the international SEO benchmarks comparison sets readiness and cost per market against real launch stages instead of vendor best cases.
